At the San Sebastián Film Festival, atresplayer presented several of its upcoming releases for the coming months. Among the announced titles, “A la deriva” stood out, a 1970s-set drama starring Paula Echevarría.

A la deriva is a production by Boomerang TV together with Buendía Estudios Canarias, with the participation of Atresmedia. The story is set in Batuel, a modest fishing village where a ship captained by Héctor Parrado and crewed by several local men was shipwrecked. No members of the crew were ever found, and most of the town’s families were deeply affected by the tragedy: mothers who lost their children, children who lost their fathers, and above all women who suddenly found themselves without husbands and without being legally recognized as widows, trapped in a strange legal limbo.

Lucía, Héctor’s wife, along with Maca, Rosa, Berta, and Paloma, are among those women. United by grief, they come together and find the strength to carry on, forging a strong friendship.

Now, two years later, the sudden reappearance of five of the missing fishermen brings a new shock to the community. Perplexity turns into euphoria, and the “returned men” are welcomed as heroes. But their return not only brings joy to the women, it also awakens conflicts and long-buried secrets.
